Tips to keep your computer clean
Keeping your computer clean doesn't need an expert and doesn't need to cost a lot of money. In most cases some simple precautions, common sense and be ready for the unexpected is all it takes enjoy safe computing without restricting what you can do with your computer and without compromising on security. In addition to the 3 key steps below, here are some general tips to keep your computer clean and safe.
If sharing your computer with others: children, friends, visitors etc, make sure they can only use an account with limited access rights (easily done with Windows NT, 2000, XP) but not applicable to Windows 98, ME etc.
Avoid P2P (peer-to-peer) sharing sites, MP3 downloading sites and software. But installing their software, you open your PC's hard disk to the world. You get what you pay for, plus some more..that you don't want.
Avoid fancy screensavers, emoticons, smileys etc, usually carry more than just a pretty and cute face. You don't need them.
Avoid browser toolbars from never heard off companies that claim to make your online experience easier. It is recommended however to use a toolbar from Google or Yahoo. Apart from making your searching easier, these toolbars will also help you block pop-ups etc.
Be suspicious of unexpected browser re-directions, especially to what looks like unheard of search engines, portals, adult sites.
Avoid downloading software off the internet, unless you know what you are doing, or the software has been recommended by a trusted person. In any case you are responsible for what ever you install on your computer, a quick search of the software name on Google or your favourite search engine will reveal to you very quickly if the software does what it claims or something else besides. There are many programs out there claiming to clean up your computer while in fact they infest your computer with viruses, spyware etc.
Be careful of what's going-on on your computer monitor. Pay attention to pop up screens, and be very careful to what you click on. Many time malicious software vendors have you believe that there is something wrong with your pc, and before you know it, your pc gets infected. Quite a few of these vendors pop up messages on your screen to make you panic and make you believe that you have a problem. The moment you agree, your machine gets infected. Just remember!! Decent companies don't promote their software like that. BE ALERT!!!!
As the old saying goes, "Prevention is better (and cheaper!!) than cure.. so ACT NOW!!
